For decades now, dentists have been using dental implants to restore smiles from the ground up. Over time, they have come to be regarded as the gold standard for replacing missing teeth, and for very good reason. No other restoration replicates the entire structure of the natural tooth the way dental implants do, making them the next best thing to getting your original smile back. Want to learn more about dental implants? Find out what they could do for you by scheduling a consultation at Bland & Tregre Family Dentistry.
What are Dental Implants?
A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is placed in the jaw in order to hold a crown, bridge, or denture to replace a specific number of missing teeth. The implant itself is a thin piece of metal; on its own, it looks like a screw. It is made out of biocompatible titanium so that it can fuse with the jawbone after it has been surgically inserted into the mouth.
The 4-Step Dental Implant Process
- Initial Dental Implant Consultation: We’ll discuss the implant process with you during your initial consultation, and we’ll schedule bone grafts or other preliminary treatments as needed.
- Dental Implant Surgery: A local specialist will place your dental implants into your jawbone. Your mouth will be numbed during this procedure, and sedation can be administered if you’re nervous.
- Osseointegration and Abutment: Three to six months are allowed for the implants to bond with your jawbone. Then, a metal piece called an abutment is attached to each implant post.
- Delivery of Permanent Teeth: The final restorations will be made based on an impression of your mouth after the abutments are in place. You’ll return to our office to have the restorations secured to the implants.
Benefits of Dental Implants
Among the many noteworthy benefits of dental implants, one of the most obvious is their longevity. Implants have a lifespan of over 35 years – far longer than that of traditional restorations. That means fewer appointments and less money spent on replacements over time. Other important advantages of implants include:
- Easy maintenance—just brush and floss like normal
- Strength and stability comparable to real teeth
- A natural-looking new smile
- New teeth that actively prevent bone loss in the jaw and help maintain the overall structure of your face
Who Dental Implants Can Help
To get dental implants, you must have lost at least one tooth (or expect to have an extraction done soon) and be in good oral health overall. That means you need a jaw that has enough bone density to support implant posts, and you need gums that are free of infection. We can discuss your current viability for implants as well as the steps you’ll need to take to become a good candidate.
